Have you ever heard of taking your "emotional temperature"? That is what I'm doing to our home this morning. It's not been 48 hours since our nephew, I'll call him T-boy, has moved in. Here's the low down:
- He's 14
- He's suspended from school indefinitely
- He has several legal charges against him
- He's a danger to his grandmother
- He's a danger to himself
- He's smart
- He's hurting
- He's starving for acceptance
- He wants love even more
The story is tragic.
It's heartbreaking.
I cried in the shower this morning.
I don't know how long he'll be here; 3 weeks or 3 years, but either way, while I have the chance, he'll be loved.
The emotional temperature in our home is "pensive". I feel like I'm mourning the death of a child who is still alive and well.
I'll tell you why tomorrow.

I don't even know your story, but I know stories like this and that's why I sit at my desk this morning, crying, my heart breaking for your nephew.
What you're doing is so amazing. I know that your background is in counseling and I'm sure this will help you as you begin this difficult journey. Also, please know that as a high school social worker, I specifically deal with this "type" of kid all the time - legal issues, school issues, generalized issues - and if, at any time, you feel like you need to talk it out, I'd love to listen!
Oh, I can't even imagine being in your house right now.
I hope the love and support that you show him really helps mold him into the person he has the potential to be.
It so amazing that you are giving this boy a chance to be loved. Im sure this hole thing is going to be though but if anyone can do it I know its you. You are amazing!
You are already making it better by doing what you are doing now. I send you lots of hugs and support!
i think this is HUGE of y'all and so nice that you're doing this. i can't wait to hear the rest of the story tomorrow.
It is so great he has someone willing to take a chance on him. =) I'm praying for you guys! I know it won't be easy, but I am sure it will have a huge impact on him! `
Sad... I'm interested to hear the rest of the story. Good luck today!
will definitely be praying!
You and your hubby are amazing people. I know you'll make a differenc in T-Boy's life; no matter how long he's with you.
The world needs more people like you and your husband to give second chances to children who need them. I'll be praying for you all.
P.S. Glad you're back.
just came across your blog and read this post and the one above. You guys seem like amazing people for taking him in. Praying for you all!
